Xbox One helps boost Microsoft’s console revenue by 14%

It wasn’t that long ago that it was rumoured Microsoft was trying to find a way of offloading its console business. The Xbox 360 was especially costly, allegedly losing the tech giant around $2 billion annually. The Xbox One’s existence is therefore somewhat of a miracle, though this time, it appears the company’s investment has paid off. Microsoft has reported that its games-related revenue has increased by $104 million, or 14%. This was almost the same increase that Microsoft’s revenue as a whole saw, jumping 17.7% to $23.4 billion in the quarter just passed. This jump in console revenue was helped in large part by Microsoft shipping 1.1 million consoles in the quarter, which included Xbox One, Xbox 360 and Microsoft Surface units, which is 10% more than was shipped exactly one year ago. It also hasn’t hurt that Microsoft has removed the Kinect as a mandatory part of the Xbox One console bundle, which ...

5 things House of Wolves changed in Destiny

Bungie shows off Destiny in 1080p on the Xbox One

Destiny is a desperately beautiful game, however for Xbox One owners playing the beta, it is a game they have yet to experience at the full 1080p resolution as their PS4 counterparts have experienced; the Xbox One beta has been running at 900p resolution. Bungie has confirmed that Destiny will be launched on September 9th at the full resolution on Xbox One, but stopped short of enabling it for the current beta due to development constraints. To help satiate your hunger for high-resolution goodness, Bungie has today released footage of Destiny in 1080p on the Xbox One. It’s… well, just look: (Quick, but obvious note: make sure you select the ‘1080p’ option in YouTube) What tears? These aren’t tears, my eyes are just leaking… with joy. Destiny in 1080p is a sight to behold, and it looks to be making the most of the Xbox One’s additional oomph, pushing out the beautiful ...

Assassin's Creed Unity

Ubisoft releases new ‘Revolution’ gameplay trailer for Assassin’s Creed Unity

The Assassin’s Creed franchise is possibly one of the most defining game franchises of our generation and the next chapter in the story, Assassin’s Creed Unity, set to be released soon. Ubisoft has just yesterday released a new gameplay trailer titled ‘Revolution’, which helps set the setting in which you will be playing; Paris in 1973, right in the midst of the French Revolution. Check out the trailer below: The trailer features the new hero in Unity, Arno, who presumably fights on the side of the revolutionaries. It might be a bit early to say (though it did win 50 award nominations at E3), but Assassin’s Creed Unity looks like it has really been fine tuned; one thing I noticed from the trailer was the more fluid camera following Arno as he ran, rather than the stoic camera in past games (I will mention that I haven’t played an Assassin’s Creed game since Revelations, ...

the evil within

‘The Evil Within’ will do something with lots of blood at QuakeCon 2014, but it’s not what you Think

If there’s one thing we know is going to be in The Evil Within, it’s blood. The survival horror game by Tango Gameworks and published by Bethesda Softworks has piqued interest ever since it was first revealed with a very confronting live action trailer which featured copious amounts of the stuff. It is said that The Evil Within is going to be at QuakeCon 2014, and while there is going to be blood there, it’s not the kind that you might expect. Using the hashtag #TheGoodWithin, Bethesda has actually teamed up with the American Red Cross to host a blood donation drive at QuakeCon and help gather that precious red stuff. If you’re somehow concerned that you’re not getting anything out of donating your bodily fluids (besides the joy of possibly saving someone’s life), Bethesda has made sure you’ll get your hands on “an official The Evil Within chill pack” which ...

Bethesda’s Pete Hines on Doom 4: “We need to prove ourselves all over Again”

When I saw Doom 4 teased earlier this year, I have to admit my heart skipped a beat. In that space of time, every pants-wetting moment of the previous Doom games managed to flash before my eyes; I bet a similar thing happened to all of you who have been scared to death by Doom games too. That’s not a bad thing either; it’s what Doom games are to us, and I’m sure many of us are eagerly anticipating the next installment in the series. However, Bethesda VP of Marketing and PR, Pete Hines, has a slightly different outlook and is approaching the hype of Doom 4 very carefully. Having just published and rebooted the Wolfenstein series in quite impressive fashion with Wolfenstein: The New Order, Hines says that Bethesda is looking at Doom 4 a lot like they way they looked at the new Wolfenstein: “… it’s been so long since ...

Amazing Destiny panorama screenshots show brand new Locales

Just what we needed to round out the week: a set of Destiny panorama screenshots that show a few of the beautiful locales that you will be able to see in the game. The images were posted up by Bungie community manager, David “DeeJ” Dague, as part of the studio’s “Weekly Update”, and shows full 360 degree views of fantastic landscapes as created by Technical Artist, Nate “Veegie” Hawbaker. While the update did not divulge any new information (DeeJ says that “every question about Destiny is a spoiler”), Bungie Day is only a few days away (July 7th), so perhaps we will find out more information then. Of course, some of you will be one of the lucky few who get to play as part of Destiny’s Beta, which begins on July 17th on PS3 and PS4, which can only add to the hype before the game is released on September ...

Dragon Ball Xenoverse

Dragon Ball Xenoverse will introduce new character to the Dragon Ball Z Universe

The Dragon Ball Z universe is no stranger to having its lore butchered – ahem, Dragon Ball GT – however, it looks like Bandai Namco is trying to find a way to constructive “rewrite DRAGON BALL history as we know it”. To do this, it looks like Bandai Namco is introducing a new character in its new Dragon Ball Xenoverse game which is due out on Xbox One, PS4, Xbox 360 and PS3 in the not too distant future. At first glance, the character looks a lot like Gohan with red hair, however he also bears the hallmarks of quite a few other characters in DBZ; the scouter is a dead ringer for a Saiyan, his outfit looks to come from Capsule Corp, and perhaps most intriguingly, his cape bears striking resemblance to Piccolo’s. Apart from that information, it’s not entirely clear exactly how this character is going to change up history, but ...
