R.I.P. Prey 2: Bethesda confirms sequel has been targeted for elimination

One game has been radio silent for some time now, and one that I have been greatly looking forward to. Unfortunately, it was announced today at PAX Australia that the game, Prey 2, has been cancelled by publisher Bethesda. Bethesda Vice President, Pete Hines, had this to say about Prey 2:

“It was game we believed in, but we never felt that it got to where it needed to be – we never saw a path to success if we finished it… It wasn’t up to our quality standard and we decided to cancel it. It’s no longer in development. That wasn’t an easy decision, but it’s one that won’t surprise many folks given that we hadn’t been talking about it… Human Head Studios is no longer working on. It’s a franchise we still believe we can do something with — we just need to see what that something is.”

Prey 2 was meant to be the sequel to the 2006 Prey, which traded in Prey’s main character for US Marshall Killian Samuels, who finds himself abducted and turns himself into a bounter hunter on the planet Exodus. It was a very cool concept, and gave birth to one of my favourite game trailers of all time:

It’s a shame that Prey 2 will never see the light of day ever again, but we have to trust that Bethesda has made the right call by canning it. Tears? These aren’t tears, my eyes are just sweating…
