Bethesda’s Pete Hines on Doom 4: “We need to prove ourselves all over Again”

When I saw Doom 4 teased earlier this year, I have to admit my heart skipped a beat. In that space of time, every pants-wetting moment of the previous Doom games managed to flash before my eyes; I bet a similar thing happened to all of you who have been scared to death by Doom games too. That’s not a bad thing either; it’s what Doom games are to us, and I’m sure many of us are eagerly anticipating the next installment in the series. However, Bethesda VP of Marketing and PR, Pete Hines, has a slightly different outlook and is approaching the hype of Doom 4 very carefully. Having just published and rebooted the Wolfenstein series in quite impressive fashion with Wolfenstein: The New Order, Hines says that Bethesda is looking at Doom 4 a lot like they way they looked at the new Wolfenstein:

“… it’s been so long since the last Doom game… We are going in as if we need to prove ourselves all over again. We have no free passes. Nobody will assume this is going to be awesome.”

There’s a lot of sense in that sentiment, particularly as some recent reboots of classics have fallen flat on their face (ahem, Duke Nukem Forever). Having said that, hype is always going to be hype and it’s always going to be unavoidable that a new Doom game is going to elicit some incredible outpouring of excitement from the now matured gaming community. The good thing though, is that Bethesda doesn’t seems content to just rest on its laurels and let hype do all the work for them:

“We are going to have to prove that this is something that’s going to be fun and different that you need to pay attention to. That has to be our default position, we can’t be: ‘It’s Doom, of course you’re going to play it’. But that just makes us work harder.”

Doom 4 is expected to be officially revealed at QuakeCon 2014 in just a few weeks, but to keep you satiated till then, check out the teaser trailer just one more time:
